The Toyota Estima was first introduced into the japanese market in 1991 and came in a 2200cc turbo diesel and a 2400cc engine. Later Toyota introduced the supercharger to the Estima petrol editions. The petrol versions of the early Toyota Estima were not very fuel efficient. The TD Estima was more economical but produced only 90 bhp so was a little under powered. Nethertheless it was a massive hit in Japan and also within the UK, The main over-riding failure was the over-heating issue causing the Cylinder heads to crack. This was due predominantly to poor maintainance on the behalf of the owners. A silt build-up within the coolant system and lack of flushing or cleaning lead to the engines over-heating when put under pressure and thus the cylinder heads cracked. The Estima engines were not at all easy to work on either due to the location below the driver, meaning removal of the front seats and lifting the floor for access. Despite this though the Toyota Estima remained a very popular MPV within the UK and Japan. Later Estima versions saw the Diesel engine dropped from the Toyota Estima range and replaced by 2400cc, 3000cc petrol and 2400cc petrol/hybrid. |
